Text N/A
Description This course is designed to build upon the skills learned in Module 1 of this series, wherein participants learned about the importance of building positive relationships and designing supportive environments (including rules, schedules, materials, and activities) to support children's social emotional development and prevent challenging behavior.

Module 2 will build on these ideas by discussing the use of effective strategies, ideas, and resources to help "teach" children social emotional skills (friendship skills, emotional literacy, development of empathy, impulse control, and problem solving).

This course is Module 2 of a 4-part series from the Promoting Social and Emotional Competence training series designed by The Center for Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL). This class encompasses the principles of the CSEFEL Pyramid Model for Promoting Social Emotional Competence in Infants and Young Children, including building an effective workforce, enhancing nurturing and responsive relationships, creating high quality supportive environments, providing targeted social emotional supports, and incorporating intensive interventions.

Objectives are listed below:

  • Discuss why it is important to be more intentional about teaching social emotional skills.
  • Identify strategies for supporting the development of friendship skills.
  • Define emotional literacy and identify activities that build "feeling vocabularies."
  • Understand the importance of providing opportunities for children to begin to understand their own, as well as others' emotions.
  • Understand why children need to learn to control anger and handle disappointment
  • Identify strategies to teach anger management skills.
