Description To provide child care providers and other early childhood professionals an overview of the benefits of serving young children with and without disabilities together. This 3-hour session introduces the characteristics of a high quality inclusive environment for preschool children. It presents basic ideas for modifying the physical space, furnishings, materials, and teaching strategies to accommodate children with physical, sensory, communication, and cognitive challenges.

  • Explore one's own feelings and beliefs about disabilities and inclusion.
  • Consider the legal, educational, and social reasons to include children with disabilities in child care centers.
  • Define inclusion and become familiar with inclusive early childhood opportunities in the community.
  • Review what research tells us about the benefits of inclusion.
  • Begin to think about simple changes in the physical environment and teaching strategies to meet the needs of children with various disabilities.
  • Discuss what a high quality inclusive early childhood program looks like.
  • Identify early warning signs of delays or disabilities.
  • Discuss important steps to take before referring a child for a suspected disability.
